Can words change the world?
When we think of business communications, we think of strategies that will further our success. Efforts to engage team members, employees, and customers might involve choosing the right words and saying (or writing) them the right way.
Choices around whether to call, email, text, or speak face-to-face are focused on how the communication method will affect the business and those involved in it. Choosing appropriate words could mean the difference between a sale and a lost opportunity.
All of that is obvious.
What may not be as obvious is that words have so much more power.
A kind and encouraging word spoken to an employee could not only inspire that individual to remain loyal to the business but could also make a significant difference to that person in bigger terms. If they’re struggling with something at home or if they’ve just had a challenging day, positive words can lift their spirit.
Can words change the world? Sure they can!
Trying to change the entire world might be a bit intimidating, so start with the person next to you, the person you see every day, or even the person you just encounter briefly.
“Please” and “thank you” are always good words. Other impactful words, depending on the situation, are “I understand” and “how can I help?”
Just as we never know what someone’s been through, we also don’t know what kind of impact our words will have on that person. In turn, we can set a positive example for that person to follow with the next person they meet.
So take the time to stop and think before speaking or writing. You might just be taking the first step to changing the world with your words.
